Tips for Getting Rid of Smoke Smell in a Home
If your home has experienced a fire you may notice that the smell of smoke lingers around your home. Over time, the smell will leave the hard surfaces in your home but it will sink into the softer ones such as carpets, furniture, blinds, drapes, etc. It is not impossible to get the smoke smell out but it is recommended to take these special measures.
Air it Out
The first thing you should do right after the fire is put out is to air out your home. Open all the doors and windows and leave them open for several hours to let in the fresh air. If you have ceiling fans or any other fans, put those on as well and point them towards the open doors/ windows to get out as much of the smell as possible. By doing this right away, you can get out a lot of the smell right away before you start the other cleaning.
Baking Soda
A popular way to get smoke smell out of carpets, curtains, and furniture is to use baking soda to clean. Sprinkle baking soda onto whatever you are cleaning and use a broom or towel to work the baking soda into the area. Leave the baking soda on overnight and then vacuum it up the next day. You can do this multiple times until the smell is out. For bigger things such as furniture, bring it outside and let it sit outside overnight. The fresh air will assist the baking soda in getting out a lot of the smell.
Use the Washing Machine
Toss everything that can go into the washing machine in there. You can include drapes, sheets, blankets, clothing, etc. Along with your detergent add a cup of vinegar in the washing machine. Vinegar works well as a cleaner and will help the detergent take away the smell of the smoke.
Use Vinegar to Clean Hard Surfaces
Although hard surfaces aren’t affected by the smoke as much, it is still important to thoroughly clean them. The best cleaning solution to use is water, vinegar, and dish soap. Mix these together and put in a spray bottle and spray all the hard surfaces in the house. Let the solution sit for a little bit and then wipe it down with a cloth.
